Pete Namlook & New Composers album artwork

Software: InDesign CS2, Freehand

Part of the first major college project was to create album artwork for an ambient music album. My album was called Pete Namlook & New Composers – Russian Spring. This album was a very calming, with light airy sounds and cold tingling bells throughout. I used this as the inspiration for the design which would house the album.

Front of the CD cover Front of the CD cover

The front and back part of the inner CD compartment had warm, rich oranges and reds, with a black silhouette of a landscape at the bottom. I also placed one tree onto the landscape, which was to symbolize the isolated feel which came across through the album. The Tahoma typeface was used for a clean, none offensive look to the album.

On the inside of the CD booklet, I chose to contrast the front with a cold, fresh composition of blues. Again, I placed a tree onto the landscape, but positioned it on the left of the page to contrast the front cover.

CD Label design The CD label design

On the CD label I decided to use square blocks. The theory behind this was to create a digitized version of the landscape, as the information on a CD is digital. This contrasted strongly to the inside of the CD inlay, which continued the wavy blue theme from inside the booklet.

Back of the CD case Rear of the CD case

The rear of the CD needed to contain all of the copyright information, as well as the bar code and track listing. I chose appropriate sizes for the information, and looked at other CDs to see where the positioning of these parts were done by convention. This gave a clear, professional look to the artwork.

I took a 3 pack shots of the final product, as I had placed the design into a CD case throughout the project. This helped me to see how the design functioned in the product as I created it.
