The Reverse Design Process

For this assignment our task was to create a series of surface designs for an unknown product. As part of my development of these ideas, I used a variety of materials including pens, pencils, oil pastels chalk pastels, acrylic paints and collage paper.

After the creative process was finished, I was informed that the product was an M5 Coke bottle. We now had to apply one of our surface designs to the product, and apply it to the supplied template.

Gaining Feedback

I tried out 3 of my surface designs, which I then showed to my colleagues on my college blog. This was so that I could gain feedback on which design was the most appropriate for the product, and which had the best aesthetic look.

After gaining feedback on the design, I chose my Arrows design. I altered the design using suggestions from the people who posted on my blog.

The final design

My final design then had to be put onto a visualisation of the coke bottle. This was done using Photoshop, and was part of the brief we had been given when making the product.

On my final design I used the idea of negative space to show the back panel information. This was done by having a blank arrow shape to show the information, which contrasted the sweeping curves of the bottle design and Coca Cola swish shape.

The final template also shows the 'splay', which compensates for warp from the application of the template onto the neck of the bottle. The render below shows what the bottle should look like with the template applied to it.

As part of the bottle render, I also created a night time view. The original M5 bottles were made using Ultra Violet ink, which would glow when put under UV lights.

Evaluation

Overall I am very pleased with the finished result. I have used vibrant colours, a contrast of straight and curved edges, and have created this website so show my finished product. If I were to do the project again, I would do more experimentation during the creative process, as well as collect more inspirational pieces of work.
