About
The Thorens 160B Mk2 is a dual speed stereo turntable. It has been in the family for over 4 decades, using a variety of different tone arms during this time. The platter is suspended on a series of springs to reduce the amount of wobble as the record is played.
How it works
The 3 springs are mounted onto the bottom plate of the record deck, which houses the tone arm. The motor is separate, and controls the rotation of the turntable by using a belt to turn a large bearing.
Switching speeds can be done simply and easily by turning the speed selection control. A small hook lifts the drive belt onto a larger or smaller diameter bearing, allowing the gearing ratio to change, thus changing the rotation speed of the platter.
Where is it now?
The turntable is still used on occasion, despite the tone arm being slightly damaged. The oil reservoir which lubricates the arm has cracked and leaked, making the arm stiff and unresponsive to the ride of the stylus.
